So I picked up a Zacuto EVF Flip Pro 3.2 on eBay this week. I paid half of retail, which was two hundred less than what other Zacuto EVFs were going for. It did arrive a bit beat up (did they film a Roller Derby movie?), but it functions well. Why an EVF? A few reasons. One is you can position it anywhere. Two is that you can’t see your screen much at all outside in the sun. Yep, even with some wings on your field monitor, it’s still very hard to see what’s on your screen not to mention how hard it would be to pull focus.
I debated getting the SmallHD DP4, but the Zacuto EVF nudged it out for features. The main was the Zacuto’s ability to be three things vs two. The Zacuto’s viewfinder can mount on a camera via gorilla plate (which I have). It can be a field monitor. And it can be an EVF.
The Zacuto wins in two more critical areas. The Frame Store is a really cool feature that lets you pull up a ghosted frame from previous shooting, so you can match new footage very well. The second thing I like more than SmallHD is the red sparkly focus peaking. Both have a contrasty focus assist, and SmallHD does edge out Zacuto in clarity of the grey edges.. but Zacuto has an awesome red sparkly edge addition to this that I feel will really make run and gun easier.
Video review to come soon.
