Panasonic Lumix GH4

June 23rd, 2014 Mirrorless 2 comments 39

Hey I want to give props to Dave Dougdale who just did a fantastic review of the Panasonic Lumix GH4. I had been trying to ignore 4k. I had told myself, “who needs 4k when no one has 4k tvs or monitors yet.” I thought I had another year or so with 1080p.

Well I’ve woken up to the harsh reality that 4k is good now. Watch Dave’s or any other 4k footage downsized to 1080p and it blows away what my Canon 5D Mark 3 can do, even shooting raw with Magic Lantern.

Am I going to leave Canon for Lumix as Dave has proclaimed? Not yet. I feel like I need to use both cameras a while to see how I feel. Dave is 90/10 photo/video and I’m more like 70/30. I still think Canon does better as a stills camera especially in low light. And for specialty photography like macro, Canon just has so many more lenses. I had planned on upgrading my “wife’s” camera to a Canon 70D, but I think now I’m going to drop a few more bucks and get a GH4 with one Panasonic lens. Hopefully I can use my Canon lenses with an adapter. Metabones has one coming out for EF to M43 conversion that adds 1 stop of light and lets you shoot a bit wider (the GH4s sensor is 1/2 the size of my 5Dmk3.)

Anyway you can watch Dave’s review below:

HI Thanks for this review and this info. I am looking at what other options I have out there as well for something like this.

    Lamar,
For 4K changeable lenses it’s the GH4 or Sony A7s right now. GH4 records 4K in camera, but the Sony is full-frame and has ridiculous high ISO, catch is you need an external recorder for 4K. Both have adapters for Canon lenses.
